Earlier today BASHandSlash.com released some disturbing news for all Call of Duty players awaiting the release of Modern Warfare 2, the multiplayer in particular. Although Infinity Ward Community Manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling did confirm the game will be released on time, his interview on the BASHandSlash webcast has lead to a massive discussion on the future of the Call of Duty series.

According to the webcast, Infinity Ward are working on a backend called IW.net to make the game more accessible to everyone. As a consequence, it is suggested there will be no dedicated servers and it could also mean there will be no room for Promod, unless IW add it to IW.net.

In addition, VAC will be used as anti-cheat instead of Punkbuster.

Jock Yitch from BASHandSlash.com summarized things as follows:

General
- IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.
- GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.
- No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.
- Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.
- DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.
- Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.

Clans
- No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.
- Listen servers will connect to each other.
- IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin

Competitive Gaming
- Competitive gaming has changed forever.
- It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.

Modding
- Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.
- Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.

It's not a good thing for playing it from here. The rank will be on the Steam account, unlike with COD4 where you can make another profile for yourself. If someone else is logged in on the Steam account you used before, you can't carry on with that profile until they close the game down.

That's as well as the lack of dedicated servers meaning we can't add MW2 to the stats.

Could be promising, all depends on the reason Infinity Ward changed it in the first place if they had good reason might not make a diffrence, Hopefully they were just being stupid and have no good reason laugh

I suppose moving from Punkbuster to VAC is a good move, Since punkbuster always cause's stupid problems that are unnessecary (You get kicked for not having 1 update....ffs.)

On the other hand, the Dedicated servers do seem to be a bad move :\ I guess we cant judge until the game comes out, Eh? Cheesy

To be honest it is getting worse, But I'm still going to trust them and hope they know what their doing. Surely if they saw nobody was playing this game they'd change it..Right?

UPDATE : Seems the Console's are loving this game, PC gamers are hating it. Why us IW? WHY? We are your loyal gamers ffs Sad
